The fence units have a battery which charges up a capacitor through a bit of
electrickery, and the capacitor is discharged through the coil (like a car
ignition coil) which gives the highvoltage pulse. The electric fence acts as an
aerial and away you go...

The pulse is such a low frequency that almost any radio or TV will pick it up as
interference. Because they are usually out in fields away from houses, they
don't cause a problem, but using them on a mains power supply instead of a
battery can cause mains-borne interference problems.

We have a couple which we used to use to keep the hosses inside a fenced area,
but don't use them now.
