Subject: [SEL] Tod Engine Progress Report

Here are a few things going on here aside from the IR air compressor
project.

Engine display building- Architectural plans are complete, building permit
has been issued. The building will be equipped with a 3 ton overhead crane
which will be able to service the entire Tod Engine. The crane itself will
be
built in house, and to that end we have made arrangements to purchase a used

double girder overhead crane. This crane will have to be lengthened to 30'
by
replacing the shorter I beams with longer ones. We have acquired a newer P&H

chain hoist and trolley, and thanks to P&H downloaded a manual for it so we
can
wire it up correctly.

We also have tentatively purchased an Allis Chalmers front end loader for
$700. I think that is well under its scrap value! Its operational
although it
has one flat tire and a tie rod between the two steering tires is broke in
three pieces. This will be our first real piece of heavy equipment, and
will be
a great help in museum construction. I say tentatively because I am
working
through a third party to buy it, and anymore I don't really consider things
a
done deal until the item is loaded on my truck and headed down the road.

For the next two weeks we are going to Washington D.C. for vacation visiting

relatives. While gone I would like to get a day or two of research done on
stationary steam engines and steelmaking. A trip to the Smithsonian is
planned.
Anyone have any "must see" things to do while I'm in that area?
