[SEL] Reid question

While rereading the December issue of GEM for the 4th time, I noted some 
information on the Reid engine (pg 26) that got my curiosity up.  It said that 
Reid sold a lot of "hot tubes" for replacement parts because they were stolen 
from the engine to make rings out of silver.  Was some part of the hot tube made 
out of silver and if so, how come?  

Always nice to learn something new!
