Joe,
On troublesome engines I'll tape or wire the plug wire such that it is 
about a 1/16" away from the the spark plug connector. Then I have a 
visual to check spark quality, spark regularity, and timing with the 
compression stroke. Plus the gap will act as an intensifier for an ill 
plug.
Just a thought.....
