Hello Tim,
	A gable rafter and a hip rafter are not normally the same pitch. A
standard 4:12 gable rafter would only be about 4' high at the peak over
a 24' span where as a hip rafter would be 8' or more at the peak over
the same span depending on the rafter design. Also bridging and
reinforcement gusset plates on a hip rafter is normally done only at the
joints where as a gable truss has bridging between the rafter run and
the cord length to reinforce it interfering with free flow in the attic
area. A 24' span is to long not to use a reinforced rafter.
