Brice, Dave and I helped Spencer hunt for an oil field engine and remove this one from the well site in W. VA. http://www.oldengine.org/members/rotigel/Spencers_Ball_Engine/index.html Spencer set it on a new 2010 gooseneck trailer and had it at the Tri-State show in Portland, IN in 2010 and 2012. With the help of Steve Webre and many other he got it running at the show. Last year Spencer sold it to me as he did not have the time to enjoy it and wanted someone to have it that would show and run it. I have found I just don't have the interest in it. I like engines but I'm a tractor guy. So, the engine and trailer are for sale. If anyone on list is interested let me know , off list, in the next couple of days. Spencer and I would like to see it go to a list member. Otherwise I will list it on Harry's page. _steve Steve Sewell Albany, Ohio USA sewell at ohio.edu sewell at atis.net From cgandree at mchsi.com Tue Jul 8 07:00:17 2014 From: cgandree at mchsi.com (cgandree at mchsi.com) Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2014 09:00:17 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [SEL] Rust Inhibitor Spray needed Message-ID: <1336329111.9915301404828017030.JavaMail.root@dsmdc-mail-mbs11> Hi Guys, I am trying to find a source for a rust inhibitor spray called LDS 1. Charlie had previously sent the story to me and had suggested that I do the same thing prior to showing the engine for the first time. I was rushed and had only two weeks before the Galloway's first show and could not find a goat in time. That was 14 years ago now and I'm happy to report that in a pinch cats work just as well as goats! Peter .................................................................... Ever wonder why a Top Fuel dragster gets a rebuilt engine after each run? Stay with this - even if you aren't a 'car nut', this is stunning. * One Top Fuel dragster outfitted with a 500 cubic-inch replica Dodge (actually Keith Black, etc) Hemi engine makes more horsepower (8,000 HP) than the first 4 rows of cars at NASCAR's Daytona 500. * Under full throttle, a dragster engine will consume 11.2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded Boeing 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate, but with 25% less energy being produced. * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster's supercharger. * With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lockup at full throttle. * At the stoichio metric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 degrees F. * Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. * Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug, which is typically the output of a small electric arc welder in each cylinder. * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way thru the run, the engine is 'dieseling' from compression and the glow of the exhaust valves at 1,400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. * If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with enough force to blow the cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half !! * Dragsters reach over 300 MPH+... before you have completed reading this sentence. * In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, a dragster must accelerate an average of over 4 G's. In order to reach 200 MPH well before reaching half-track, at launch the acceleration approaches 8 G's. * Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! * Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. * The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 RPM. * THE BOTTOM LINE: Assuming all the equipment is paid for, the pit crew is working for free, & NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run will cost an estimated $1,000 per second. 0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run) 0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run) 6 G-forces at the starting line (nothing accelerates faster on land) 6 negative G-forces upon deployment of twin chutes at 300 MPH An NHRA Top Fuel Dragster accelerates quicker than any other land vehicle on earth.quicker than a jet fighter plane.quicker than the space shuttle.or snapping your fingers!! The top speed record is 337.58 MPH as measured over the last 66' of the run (2005, Tony Schumacher). Let's now put this all into perspective: Imagine this...........You are driving a new $140,000 Lingenfelter twin-turbo powered Corvette Z-06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to 'launch' down a quarter-mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard on up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the dragster at an honest 200 MPH.... The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that exact moment. The dragster departs & starts after you. You keep your foot buried hard to the floor, and suddenly you hear an incredibly brutally screaming whine that sears and pummels your eardrums & within a mere 3 seconds the dragster effortlessly catches & passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it - from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH.....and it not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the planet when he passed you within a mere 1,000 foot long race !!!! I wonder why I still have not seen my post with the question,,,, I did go to Smok-Stak and find that answer. I have had the 1 1/2 HP E for at least 15 years so it is about time to take it to the Buckley show and see if I can fire it up. I believe I have found all of the parts I either bought for it or removed from it so long ago. Tomorrow I hope I have time to pull it out and check it's gas tank out. Two years ago I took a 1911 Ottawa 4HP footed base farm engine that hadn't run in 82 years to the show. It had to have a cart or some tall skids because the 24" flywheels were setting on the ground. I took lumber, wheels, axles and bolts and spent the first day of the show building the cart and mounting the engine. Day two I was working on the reproduction ignitor made by George Meyers and the trip arm wouldn't line up so I replaced it with a 3/8 bolt and two nuts. It was easy then to adjust it. Using the mixer it last run with was a small challenge because it is so worn out. It had so many air leaks that I screwed the fuel knob all the way out so I slapped a piece of Gorilla tape over the mixer air inlet and cut a 3/4" slit in it. Then I could adjust it and instead of a few barks it fired up, I got it tuned in and ran it for a while then I shut it down. I ran it the next day too. It has a strong bark when it fires. I had to pick the gov. springs from my parts stock and my guess is it was running pretty close to rated speed. I have a Letz #6 feed grinder for it to pull so I want the whole 4HP. I am not doing corn this year so that is why I picked one of my project engines to fire up. Every time I do one of these at the show I get a LOT of people hanging around. There were at least 30 there for the Ottawa. Doing this at the show I find I am getting guys wanting me to look at their engines to tell them what they need. The last guy was going to take his all apart to figure out why it wouldn't latch out and I just told him to remove that small bolt and turn that part around. The small latch out block was all chipped away on the edge and the guy spent five minutes turning it around and was so happy to have a slow runner instead of that raging beast. I do not understand why they can't just look at it and see the real problem. ________________________________ From: Arnie Fero To: sel at lists.stationary-engine.com Sent: Monday, July 28, 2014 3:37 PM Subject: Re: [SEL] Webster Mag for Hercules? ? To a kid fresh off the farm that was pretty racy. I smile to myself every time I see a can of the stuff. And it helps me remember how to spell it. B? They only had the rattle can type but could order it in the spray bottle if I wanted but vidoed that as it cost any extra $12 to ship it to me. Glad I discussed it with you guys as this stuff will also help and protect some of my guns when not being used all the time. Thanks to you and all the other guys on the group. Think about it - from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH.....and it not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the planet when he passed you within a mere 1,000 foot long race !!!! That, my friend...is acceleration! _______________________________________________ SEL mailing list SEL at lists.stationary-engine.com http://www.stationary-engine.com/mailman/listinfo/sel From jrwright at adam.com.au Thu Jul 17 04:08:39 2014 From: jrwright at adam.com.au (John Wright) Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2014 20:38:39 +0930 Subject: [SEL] John Robson Oil Engine Message-ID: <004301cfa1af$769a5bd0$63cf1370$@com.au> Hi to all on the sel list. ? Anheuser-Busch sells universal shim material in 0.0047? thickness. The material comes in cylindrical shapes, so you?ll need tin snips to cut it into the shape of the main caps. You?ll probably want to buy a pack of six or twenty-four, so you?ll have enough. If you?re doing the work outside on a hot day, this is definitely the material you?ll want to use. If you want brass material in different thicknesses, you can call McMaster-Carr, but the AB material works perfectly fine.
