That is great info to file away. I was looking at a very old buzz rig that I am considering waking up and I was wondering if I should use my good babbitt or just some of the wheel weights that I have or even some of the one pound ingots I have made. I still have over 100 pounds of wheel weights to melt so I will probably use them. Leroy Hey, you old lid puncher. Wheel weights contain a lot of antimony, so they?re not all that soft. They SEEM softer than most babbitt I?ve worked with. If it?s any help, I?ve used wheel weights for bearing material. The bearing is about 2? in diameter, can holds an idler pulley that?s about 30 pounds and pulls about ten horsepower. The last time I checked, there was NO noticeable play. Because of this one experiment, I?d be comfortable using wheel weights again. It was probably made with the same basic components. It looked they cleaned up and re-purposed the brass buzzer parts from an old Model T coil but used a nice new modern high tension coil inside. I could not tell if the coil was made for the application or was intended for some production engine. It had the core exposed and extended on one end so that it could protrude up through the wood cover to be in close proximity to the steel disc under the buzz points. It worked quite well with 6V and produced a very hot spark. I would not hesitate to use them again. The engine not starting puzzle is probably one of the first things I would have told her. It won't start because the magneto it shorted to the case as it is mounted so it sparks fine off the engine then will not spark on the engine. My wife's step-dad had a 1 1/2 Economy E that did that to him. It was a fun read, Dave. When married and have kids we have to prioritise around family, work and hobbies. When the kids are gone we get keen again and have the time. As we get a little older we tend to slow down, we can no longer lift or drag like we used to and in some cases ill health follows. The reason for my inactivity engine wise is the over regulation and rallies and we have been there before. I have many hobbies which I have never been busier at: World Licence Plates Glass Telephone Insulators Kerosene Lamps, torches, stoves etc Valve (tube) Radios Edison Cylinder Phonographs and Gramophones General collectables Old Tools Engines and more, I have taken over my late father?s valve (tube) radio collection, as well as his many Edison Cylinder Phonographs and Gramophones. These are mostly bench repairs and restorations, easy to work on and something I really enjoy. We remember when Patrick was single and now married with an active son, prefect example of change. Reg is the example at the other end of the spectrum and we are all heading there. You simply follow your heart and if things annoy you just move on or around the problem.
