Members of the Tuttle family owned the 135-acre farm in Dover since 1632, one of America's oldest continuously operated family farms. They put the fruit-and-vegetable farm up for sale in the summer of 2010 as they dealt with competition from supermarkets, pick-it-yourself farms and debt. The original price was $3.35 million. Foster's Daily Democratreports it sold last month for a little over $1 million to Matt Kozazcki, who owns a farm in Newbury, Mass. "It's huge," Kozazcki told the paper. "It's a lot of heritage. We're trying to make it as much of a farm as possible. You can't forget the Tuttles. I can appreciate the work they did," Kozazcki told the paper. Kozazcki calls the business Tendercrop Farm and plans to sell meat and produce starting in December. Kozazcki said he plans to install a memorial plaque honoring the Tuttles near the farm store entrance. The New York Times columnist Verlyn Klinkenborg wrote a piece in 2010 when the farm went out of business. She points out that the farm was founded when there were, maybe, 10,000 colonists in America. "It is too simple to say, as the Tuttles have, that the recession killed a farm that had survived for nearly 400 years. What killed it was the economic structure of food production. Each year it has become harder for family farms to compete with industrial scale agriculture ? heavily subsidized by the government ? underselling them at every turn," Klinkenborg wrote. However, neither of the articles I read on this say anything about why they got into a situation where they had to sell the farm. Competition from other places is no excuse, unless you're not willing to change to be competitive or unable to sell your products based on quality rather than price. Many small farmers also get a job off the farm to make ends meet if the farm is not earning enough. Yes, it is terrible a family farm with so much history was lost. Governmental regulations following closely behind that. The little farms can not keep up with the cost of implementing the new crop handling and production regulations constantly being forced upon them. And they can not take advantage of the governmental subsidies as well as the mega farms. And there may have been some ineptitude in the operation as well. It was a lot of things I bet. I was looking at a odd little 4 cyl marine engine. I pointed to the gear box that held the distributer and mounted on the block and pointed out that it was a odd color and didn't look like a old casting. The owner explained that he had bought the engine cheep because it had a shattered cast iron part. It was the only one known and there were no parts available. He used the shattered parts to build a CAD model. He had the model printed by Solid Concepts. He then reamed the holes, pressed in the sleeve bearings, tapped the mounting holes and bolted it on and ran the engine. I have used Solid Concepts for a number of parts, they do good work. Arnie, If you like, send this off to the engine list. We've been doing that for many years now although the main place we go changed their policy a few years ago. Originally, vets could order anything off the regular menu and your entire meal was free. Although we still had to pay for our spouses meals as neither of them are veterans. A few years ago they came up with a limited menu which vets could choose from. We're trying Applebees's tonight for the first time on the free meal. Almost tried it a few years ago, but the parking lot was full and the line of vets waiting to get in was out the door! Went to Subway instead and got a free sandwich. On my way to work this morning I stopped at a restaurant and got a free breakfast. I can also get a free car wash on my way home from work today, but doubt I'll take them up on that offer. One of the few benefits of being a veteran. Still don't get the day off from work, but I'm not complaining. "In a system committed to the health of farms and their integration with local communities, the result would have been different. In 1632, and for many years after, the Tuttle farm was a necessity.
