That is only important if you're trying to make a profit and you're looking at gate receipts. The people that matter the most are the exhibitors and getting a chance to visit with fellow collectors. This may be taken the wrong way by some people, but for me I prefer exhibitor only shows. Although I do realize that the spectators are needed by most shows to cover the expense of putting on the show. -----Original Message----- From: sel-bounces at lists.stationary-engine.com [mailto:sel-bounces at lists.stationary-engine.com] On Behalf Of Rob Skinner Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 4:52 PM To: The SEL email discussion list Subject: Re: [SEL] More National Rally Photos. This trip will really be an adventure unlike the previous trips and tours I've done. For the first time only the first day (next Thursday) is really planned. After arriving at the Amsterdam airport, we'll go visit the Juffer family and see their excellent collection. This has pretty much become a tradition with me as the Juffer's have been the first stop I make the past 11 years. After the Juffer's we'll head to Germany to visit another friend that Harry and I have visited several times. We met this guy on our first engine trip to Germany and dropped in unexpectantly on him. I had a German engine book with a photo of the guy, his name and the town he lived in. We were passing near his town so made a detour to find him. Stopped a person on the street, showed them the picture of the guy and they knew where he lives! The next part is where the real adventure starts! We go to the Czech Republic for 4 days and meet a guy I've been exchanging emails with for the past year. This is a great unknown as Zdenek doesn't speak any English, although he does some German. His emails can be confusing since he runs all of them through a translating program. He does appear to know a lot of collectors in CZ and has said he has 25 locations for us to visit! After we leave the Czech Republic we'll wander around for a few days and try to visit some more collections before returning to Harry's home on the Thursday before the Nuenen show. Load up for the Nuenen show on Friday morning and go to the show. The show should be a great one this year as I know that a lot of people (many on this list) will also be there. With slidevalve engines being featured this should be a historic show. I'm not sure who all is in that group, but I'm sure Dolly has her hands full this time. Definitely more of a challenge than just taking Arnie around to the various pubs. I don't know if Nuenen is really prepare with the invasion of so many SEL people and associated SmokStakkers. Weather was cr*p, rained heavily on the Thursday and Friday, Saturday was dull and cool, Sunday was brilliant and Monday dull and cool again. The engines were absolutely superb, there was almost everything you could wish for, the Lenoir, slide-valve engines, a Junkers free-piston engine, lots of the regular stuff and a fair smattering of vendor stuff to look at. We took the Ruston which ran without problems the whole weekend, but the weather really hurt the attendance figures, instead of the expected 360 exhibitors, only just on 300 turned up, put off no doubt by the weather. We were in the trailer, so fairly immune from it, but we did suffer condensation after two days of heavy rain and cooking/showers inside. Saw lots of List folk, Arnie, Roysters, Kelley (didn't talk with Rob but saw him on the field) Keith and Debbie Kinney, and loads of folks from Smokstak. The brass exhibitor plaque was most unusual and very nice, a brass cast model of a Deutz inverted slide-valve engine. Almost a collectors item already! Many thanks to Anton and his wife Annie, and Bas Jamar who all put in serious amounts of work and time in the pouring rain.
