     In your comment below you spelled it out about as well as I've seen.
Sadly, many juries seem to have this thinking.  Likewise I've heard jurors
say "it didn't cost them anything, insurance is paying for it".  I want to
yell "and who's paying for the insurance!"

Don't forget that if she bought frivolous things, she didn't get much
benefit, so it isn't a very serious crime.

If she bought food, that was a necessity and therefore not a serious crime.
