Thank you, Francis.
I knew I had saved every pair of leather boots I have ever had for some good reason,,,,
I have a large box of them downstairs. I just couldn't throw away all that leather.

My father used the following method  to make  new leathers for water pumps.
I have made seals for a hydraulic jack using  this technique.
Take the upper part of an old leather boot.  Then cut out circle of leather
(the diameter of the cup plus its  length).  Next take a scrap/piece of
wood and bore a hole which have a diameter of the cup plus twice the
thickness  of the leather.  Then make a wooden  peg the diameter of the cup.  Soak
the leather in water for about an hour.  Center the pre-cut circular piece
of leather over hole in the wood scrap and force the peg on top of leather
into the hole.  Let dry.  Now you will have a pre-formed leather  cup which
will fit into your oil can pump.   It may be necessary cut/punch a hole in
the pre-formed leather for the pump rod.  The oil (in the can) will  cause
to leather to expand and make a good seal.
