Good story Dave, bringing back memories.
Being Australian, for us it's Mum's clothesline.

Old bush poles, (small gum trees) about foot or eighteen inches thick, with a wire strung between, and a forked stick or two to hold the line up and stop long stuff dragging on the ground.(Clothesprops they were called, in our family anyway).

Washing day was always Monday, early days a big copper pot bricked in with a fireplace underneath and a rough chimney behind. A clothes stick resting on the copper (brick) surrounds, used to agitate the clothes and lift them out of the hot water. Straight into a hand worked wringer (Acme brand was popular). The washing copper pot was always called the "copper". (Sunday night the kindling would be set under the copper, ready for Monday wash.)

A large jam cooker was also made of copper, but to differentiate, was called the jampan, not the copper. Sat on top of the stove, fire not too hot, keep stirring, don't let the jam stick (and burn)

Enough of the reminiscing, gotta get back to other stuff.

Thanks Dave
Teddy.
