George:  The big engines like Scania and Volvo use 'piston ring' type
rings to seal the header joints. The in-line 6's and the V8's all use
those joints to allow for expansion/contraction without stressing the
face joints at the heads. The engines were/are pretty long and there
was one centre piece and two outside pieces. Diameter was about 1.75"
or so.

As far as you own unit goes, these run pretty hot at full power, so
I'd guess you need something that stays flexible at very high
temperatures, I don't know if even silicon joiner paste will be that
good.
