Jimmy also recommended that using a grinder is a quick and simple way to make a thin wall socket.
Also recommended using a higher quality socket.

However, he had a better solution that eliminates the problem.

Replace the bolts with socket head cap screws!

A cheap socket is going to be weak to start with.  Thinning it will make it weaker.  If it is a low enough torque you can get away with it.  
 
I have done it before but not on a lathe.  A socket is going to be pretty hard tool steel.  I have done it on a grinder.  Put it on an extension and spin it against a grinder or better yet a sanding belt.  Remove as little as possible and then polish it as good as you can by hand to reduce places for cracks to start.  Go slow and dont overheat it.  If it starts turning straw or blue color you have lost the heat treat and it will be weaker yet.  If nothing else fits it is worth a shot.
