[SEL] 32 volt question

Hi all the Guru's out there,
         A few questions re 32 volt lighting systems. I have a Lister D, a 
Petter AS and another 32 volt lighting set.

         I would like to use one of them to charge Lead acid batteries (12 
volt). Now, 12 volt into 32 volt does not go !!! (and even combinations of 
12 and 6 - if we could still get 6 volt batteries here).

         Now, how were these used in those days?  3 x 12 volt batteries (my 
plan) = 36 volts - will a 32 volt genset charge these  3 x 100 amp/hour 
batteries . (O.K. I know that I'm going to be asked for "output" of the 
generator).

The Petter AS has the following  details on the genny plate:

Generator charging 1260 watt.
35 Volts - 36 Amps - 1000 R.P.M.
Lancashire Dynamo & Crypto Ltd.
W.D. No. 8611  (I assume WD=War Dept. as this is a military style genset.)
1943.
(The Petter AS engine is 2.75 H.P. @ 1800 RPM)

The only details I have at hand on the Lister are :

Generator No. 42234N
Volts: 32/43
Plant No. 63670 NA
Lister Switchboard Type: CT    No. 36169
         I think there is more info on the plate but I would need to move a 
lot of stuff to reach it in the store - right now.

         This is a standard Lister "D" type genset (not S.O.M.)(Rad cooled) 
coupled to a Lister genny. I'm hoping someone out there knows the specs 
(Peter Forbes, Roland ???)

         (The Lister D engine is rated  2 H.P. @ 1100 RPM and was made in 1958)

         Second question: Approximately how long would each of the above 2 
take to charge 3 x 100 amp/hour batteries  (coupled in series to equal 36 
volt).
