Elden,

Your post reminded me that many many years ago when I was first getting into engines I bought a 3hp John Deere locally. It was missing the factory magneto and the owner of the engine had been trying to run this ignitor engine off a battery and "buzz" coil! They had bought a real nice engine buzz coil, not an old Model T Ford coil.

Anyway, the engine was cheap as they couldn't get it to run and were giving up on it. So I got the engine which was in pretty nice shape, plus the buzz coil they had been using to no avail.

Got it home and pulled out an old auto coil I had laying around as I had no low tension coils, and hooked up the one side like you mentioned in your posting and had the engine running fine in a few minutes! So I ended up with a running 3hp JD, plus had a nice engine buzz coil that I found a use for many years later.

No longer have the JD engine but I probably still have that buzz coil sitting on a shelf somewhere.

George

*: A suitable low tension coil can be made using the primary of a
regular auto ignition coil, a starter solenoid, an auto A/C
clutch coil or other suitable inductance.

I hope this helped.

Take care - Elden
