Yes and that chain stitch is exactly what feed or flour sacks are sewn with.
SO, A gal that says it is NOT a sewing machine because it does not have a bobbin just doesn't know about feed/flour sack sewing machines.

There are some machines that use only a single thread and sew what is known as a Chain Stitch and they don't use a bobbin, but it does have something to catch the thread and make the chain. I have a couple of hand battery powered units that do this. But then, it could be something else too.
