Tom,

My dad (a machinist) used to say that was the difference between a machinist and a
machine operator.  You could give the machinist a part to make and the oldest, most
worn out machine in the shop, and he'd turn out the part that was needed.  I fear
those skills are being lost in today's computer-operated world.
