I've used a product called "Gunk".  You can buy it in concentrated form.  Just mix it with kerosene (paraffin to our Limey friends).

You can spray or brush it on with a soft bristle brush.  Let it soak then apply another coat or wash off with a garden hose.  Most of the time the grease and oil will emulsify and float right off. 

If you have to re-apply, wait until the surface is totally dry before doing it.  Water will deactivate Gunk.

It's very gentle to paint.
