"It is most amazing what folks eat around the world! Watching some travel
program the other evening and they shook some ants out of a tree into a
bucket of water and then drank the water which supposedly tasted like
lemonade! Not cooked or anything, just swirl the ants around in the water. So, it
had to be the secretion of some kind from the ants flavoring the water.
Maybe the swirling water scares the s***t out of them!"

It's formic acid, Tom. Same stuff that stings when they bite, but diluted.

Rats were a welcome change in RVN after six weeks of mutton.
I think part of the deal to have the Oz troops there was to buy mutton. We're
talking mutton, not lamb. Some of it had to be as old as I was; the chops
were huge. It wasn't bad for a while, but after being seared on the barbie,
baked, fricasseed, sauteed, fried, boiled, sliced and fried like bacon - any
thing else was good. The Montagnards would catch these good-sized rats,
gut, stuff with a potato analog tuber, wrap in leaves, and bake in hot rocks.

Had worse.
