A long time ago I tried the gunpowder trick once with limited success.

The whole thing was an experiment.  I had to get rid of about a quarter pound of black powder and the engine was a locked-up GMC 235 engine that was headed for the scrap heap.

Actually, what happened is that the piston was driven down hard enough to compress the rod, break the crankshaft and blow the oil pan partly off.  I think, had the engine been salvageable, it would have been better to use more conventional methods.

It was impressive, though.
