Chuck...it may be English in origin, most words we use are ,It may be that
it is a term that is used in the US . My delving into dictionarys refers to
soot ,a black powder that adhers to the insides of chimneys.We all know that
,if there is another meaning it is unknown to me.Perhaps it is some mushy
term used for a child.Anyway if it is offensive lets know off list .always
ready to learn ,could save embarrasment as there is a US navy ship in the
harbour celebrating the ''Great White Fleet'' of 1909 ,they visited our 
little town . Get out your Gob hats ,the Yanks are in town tonight .I warned 
some of the local girls ,could be a Hot Time in Town tonight!
