This is something that has impacted other mailing groups as well as
SEL and Oldengine.org.

When engine-related was at its peak in the late 1990's, web-based
forums were relatively rare, so most of the traffic went through the
email lists. Now there are literally hundreds of forums, the volume is
diluted across those extra places, and many of us just don't have the
time to be on all of them all the time.

The Usenet newsgroups are suffering as well, they have gone from
15,000 groups to over 100,000, and the same problem arises, dilution
of the available traffic across a larger number of more and more
specialised groups.

I can remember the indiana.edu lists well, and still have a lot of the
emails on old hard drives, it is interesting to go back occasionally
and see how positions and opinions have changed.
