Don't know the name for a special tool, but with overhead lineshafting,
the simple mechanism to shift the belt between fast/loose pulleys was
called the "Striking Gear",
 which I suppose does describe a stick fairly well . . .

Thanks Jack. Striking gear is a new term for me and googling it did bring
some interesting results. I have seen various photo's of the old lineshafts
and the associated levers which control the belts plus there was a machine
shop in my hometown that had several overhead lineshafts when I was a kid.
Course I never paid any attention then :-(
For Helen and Jim...don't go to any trouble to find the pictures. I have
seen the levers (striking gear) which engaged what I call the old post
drills. Hopefully one of these days we will install a lineshaft in the back
room of my shop where all the old iron is. We acquired one this past summer
and now just need to find some good wood beams and come up with a classy
looking structure. So far we have an ole metal lathe, post grinder, big
drill, and am always looking for a trip hammer, course they are quite pricy
now.
Maybe someone has an instruction manual for an old pump that shows how to
move the belt from one pulley to the other. I'm sure a stick would work
fine as Rob mentioned and seeing as how I live out in the sticks, this would
not pose a problem. But I'd almost bet someone came up with a gizmo just
for that.

  Thanks gang...neat stuff!!
