I generally don't like Haynes brand manuals and find them to be pretty much useless EXCEPT for one thing.  Haynes manuals have wiring diagrams in the back of the book which have gotten me out of a few jams.  
BTW: The problem that you describe could very easily be caused by a faulty headlight switch.
