what about applying some raw linseed oil to the wood?  it would feed  
the wood from drying out and [as anyone know who's applied raw LO by  
mistake] would have a tacky outside to provide gription (technical  
term) on the metal surface ( also like Tommy's suggestion of roughing  
up the surface to remove any surface glaze)
