Always used to be called "pump buckets" in my kneck of the kwoods. 
(Western Qld)

My father used to make them out of the nice thin leather from old boot 
or shoe tongues, annointed with neatsfoot oil, and shaped round a bit of 
wood, probably the end of an old broomstick that happened to be the 
correct diameter. I'm sure he never bought a new one in his life.

And the young people of today think they invented "recycling"! Pshw! ( I 
can say it even if I can't spell it)
