Hi Peter, I wondered why you didn't just google the question but when I tried it I found no one will give you the answer.
see http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/SAE which seems to suggest either "Society of Automotive Engineers" or 
"Society of American Engineers".  I hope someone knows more!
