[SEL] SAE origins please

Hi Guys

What is the origin or wording behind the wrench sizes SAE, does SAE stand for Society of Automotive Engineers ????
I have heard of SAE as we all have, but never bothered to work out what it means until I just stumbled across something on the Web today to do with R&V.
