1997, I WANT a flywheel engine. Nothing I can afford for sale at the Buckley Old Engine Show except a 3HP TG FBM ZC 52.
It is $300 and sitting there on the right rear corner of a flatbed trailer with it's buddies.
There is a huge, old 5HP ?? hit n miss engine in the center and three other engines in the other corners. All engines are bolted down running.
The trailer has a nice bounce to it,,,,,, from the huge engine says the seller.
Well,,,, We shut down the FBM and stupid me didn't notice the trailer jumping decrease a bunch. 8>((
I bought the engine complete with crank, clutched pulley and fanned condenser unit. BTW,,, The seller also told me it was a five horsepower engine.
I should have started the engine right there, but no,,,,, I took it home and let it set until the show in 1998. I took MY ENGINE and a lot of other stuff and that was my first year to display. I started that engine and it was jumping so hard it headed right across my canopy and it went at least 15 feet before I could get it shut down.
That working side main bearing was worn out BAD.
I bought a good engine at the show that year and then several more engines found me so I traded that FBM off as/is for a good, hot Webster mag on a Hercules bracket. I was sure to tell the man what he was getting too.
BTW,,,, I do still have the complete clutched pulley assembly and it is for sale. 8>)) It is a double V-belt pulley.
If only I had known the Cushman X was going to be there for me in 1998 I sure never would have bought that FBM lump of crap.

Here's another topic:
Have you ever bought an engine that you later wish you'd never bought?
In my case I bought a 2hp New Holland engine. It's a nice engine.

So.... Where's the remorse?
As I posted earlier, I've been leaning more towards vertical engines
which the NH obviously is not.
This past weekend I saw a vertical R&V engine I would sure like to have
and could have bought if I hadn't bought the NH engine. Having limited
funds for buying engines can be a problem when there are so many engines
out there to buy ;-)
Several years ago I picked up a 5hp Galloway for a friend. My friend
had made the deal and I went to get the engine and pay the seller. The
seller delivered the engine to a show that I was at and I was busy doing
stuff when the seller showed up with the engine. I had him transfer it
to my pickup bed and paid him for the engine.
After the seller left I had time to look at the engine and found that it
was basically a piece of crap. There were broken, cracked, repaired,
missing, etc. parts all over the engine. There was hardly a piece of
the engine that didn't have some problem or repair made to it.
I've always regretted getting that engine and wish that I'd told the
seller to just keep it as it was in much worse condition than the photos
had shown.
