and then stand on one grip and it will bite and not slip
like a pipe wrnech that works .

as an experiment I put a nut on 4" X 1/2 bolt ....ran it in till it hit the 
shank
stuck it in the the vice , stood on the workbench and bounced it against
the threaded end with one foot till I twisted it off
