There is a little trap for the unwary in the serial numbers.

If you look at the page that Peter has mentioned, the CS Lister
numbers are over on the right hand side, and don't get to 6-digits.

This is one of the post-1950 engines:

284 is the serial number
31 is the engine type = 3/1
4 is the year of manufacture = 1954

The 3-1/2hp wasn't made that early either, another pointer.
