Paul,
Basically the same as hot bulb. A cast iron box is heated by a lamp 
(flame) to over the spontaneous combustion temp of the fuel. When the 
engine is pulled thru the starting procedure the hot bulb ignites the 
fuel. Once the engine is running under load the lamp can be extinguished 
as sufficient heat will be generated and retained within the hot bulb.
