Stove polish is a wax based goop that is really, really black.  It's  
like furniture wax for cast iron.  Don't wear rubber gloves when you  
use it.  The stuff I use is made by Rutland.  You can google it, or  
call your fireplace store, or call Rutland direct at 800-544-1307 if  
you want to buy it by the case.  Two tubes should last you a while.
