Yup - I run 2 - 6 volt gel-cell batteries (like from a computer UPS) in
series to give me 12v. Lasts all weekend, good hot spark. NO coil damage or
problems.

Hi Nick,
         12 volts will not hurt anything and will give you a hotter spark. 
I use a 12 volt on my 1915 low tension Galloway and also on my high tension
Domestic.
