Has anyone ever thought of using a timing light ?

I usually time the spark via the instructions in a manual.
Or - By putting a chaulk mark at about 15º BTDC.
Valve timing also has a great deal to do with how an engine runs.

Once timed - I check the chaulk mark on the flywheel to see how 
steady it is and - if any further adjustments are needed.
