Hi,
I have made two ZD cranks using Rob's schematic.  To make my  job easier, I 
fabricated a jig to help maintain the crank dimensions and bend  angles.  I 
used a ¼" socket bolt for the engaging pin.  One  thing I discovered is that 
9/16" diameter rod is hard to  find.
Last year at the antique engine show, I saw one exhibitor start a  ZD using a 
short end of a ZD crank with a the engaging pin and an  electric drill.
