[SEL] old, old gasoline varnish solvent ??

the OTTO engine has been sitting for a very long time with the old gas in
it. the intake valve and fuel pump check balls were stuck with varnish
and the mixer and fuel line filter have hard varnish plugging the up.
the gas tank has a sticky mess in the bottom.
 
what is the solvent of choice to remove old gasoline varnish?
preferably one that won't harm paint.
