G'day Peter S
Interesting story - 300 miles for an engine trip is
quite a drive even for Oz dwellers. We also have a
reverence for "the shed". There's a song about Aussie
Blokes and their sheds (Every Aussie bloke needs a
shed) or something like that.
Your suggestion of the Alice to Townsville is a
r-e-a-l good choice. This's frontier stuff. Let me
see... 70Km out of Alice, turn right, another 70k's
and you hit dirt, 430K's to the border (there'd be
some water tanks along there I'd reckon) then another
600k's to Winton, where you'd hit the bitumen again.
After that a mere 830K's to the coast, then you could
travel the Great Barrier Reef coast road for another
700K's and you'd be in Townsville. A Renault with
200,000 clicks up might not be the greatest choice...
and it would have to be a bloody good engine you'd be
collecting!

PS QLD for Queensland or sometimes just Q is what we

Well, so far in my hobby career, I have only made
three "real"
engine-related trips. I count a "real" trip as one
that takes me
out of
the county (about 50 miles on average in the UK) and
requires a
trailer
to bring back the spoils. I had another one that
nearly
sketch featuring a certain "Two-Sheds Jackson"...)
Unfortunately, the
Bismarck, ND, to Topeka, KS, or Alice Springs, NT, to
Townsville,
QL (is
that the right abbreviation for Queensland?). It
doesn't take
quite so
long, though, and the roads might be a little better
than in
Oz...
Regards to all
Pete
