Hi Francis,

It sounds like a Briggs and Stratton Model ZZ,

Subject: [SEL] New Project -- Need to Identify Engine

Hi List,
I am starting to work on engine that belongs to a friend. He had used this
engine to pump water (jack pump) for his cattle. It hasn't been in use for
some time.
We need to identify what kind of engine this is since there is no name tag.
The tag that is located on cylinder shroud is stamped with the following:
ZZ
308171. Another set of numbers is also stamped in larger font: 228605.
Valve clearance settings (In: .020 -- Exh: .022) are stamped near the
bottom of
the tag.
The engine is about 12" x 12" x 20" high. The cast iron flywheel is 10"
diameter x 3½" wide. The crankshaft diameter is 1-3/16". The crankshaft
has
been turned to 1" diameter where the pulley attaches. The spark plug is
mounted 90° to the cylinder. It has an updraft carburetor (no name) with a
side
air intake of 1½" diameter. The air intake is oil bath filtered. The
crankcase breather is located on the opposite side of the carburetor, under
the gas
tank, and screws into the crankcase. There is a magneto shut off rod
mounted
on the upper side of the shroud. The gas tank is estimated to hold about
1½
to 2 gallons of gasoline and has glass bowl filter (with shut off valve)
mounted underneath. The rope starter pulley is made to lock the flywheel
nut and
is fastened to the flywheel with 2 -- 3/8" diameter SAE bolts. The head
bolts are imprinted with the name: "Rockford".
The linkage to the carburetor from the governor arm is missing. I have no
idea how this linkage is designed nor how the speed of the engine is
controlled. This the main reason to find out what kind of the engine this
is.
Hopefully someone else has the same type engine so I can get some idea how
to set
up the governor/carbuetor linkage. Of course, the carburetor will need
some
cleaning.
The high tension lead have been cut and needs to be replaced. The points
probably need to be cleaned. Therefore, the flywheel needs to be removed
to
gain access to the ignition system.
Other than the things I have mentioned above, the engine is in fairly good
shape and turns over easy. It had a large accumulation of dirt on the
outside
and on the inside of the shroud and the air intake tube. There is a small
crack on the top of the oil bath filter cap and a broken air intake pipe
bracket.
