[SEL] oil wicking OT?

Gday
    Has anyone here ever hear of the old time oil wicking? I thinks I 
read this one time about taking used oil and wicking off the good left 
in the oil, but this is all I seem to remember. I talked with Johnny 
Walker and John Beam about this but neither one had much to say on the 
subject..  How do you wick oil, up down and with what?
