Hi Tom,

I think you'll find that the vast majority of ball bearings are high
carbon steel.  You need hardness on the order of RC 60+ to withstand the
contact stresses without deformation.  For some limited applications in
highly corrosive environments, you might see high carbon 400 series
stainless steels used.  But not typical 300 series stainless steels; those
are way too soft.
