Ron,

The height is just to the underside of the casting.  It is a tight fit when 
sitting on the straps and bumps the casting on top.  Maybe to help stabilize it 
in the housing?  You are correct in that it takes a long time to use the 
fuel.  I think I ran mine for three days at Kinsers (Lancaster, Pa.) before I ran 
out one time.  I usually run my engines all day.
