I believe I remember seeing that pipe puller trick.  Something about the 
physics of the slide hammer that I don't understand.  Possibly pushing on 
the flywheel/gear and pulling on the gib has something to do with it.

 I tried using a slide hammer on one for days with lots of heat and
cussing and got no where.  Then i welded a bolt to the end and used a
pipe for a puller and it worked like a charm, but not without some
serious pulling on a 1' long 1/2" drive socket.
