This has the single diaphragm, but the total advance is the critical issue
here, correct.
I'll check the advance curve on it and see - probably best back it off a
bit.

This was when they were first starting emission controls and the retarded
timing got them by for a little while, helped one area but hurt another that
wasn't being checked at the time, don't remember the details. This was when
you would see the dual diaphram distributors that would actually retard the
timing at idle. Check your total advance if you leave it set high, you may
be over advancing. A timing advance kit in the distributor would get things
