Thanks, John, that makes "neat" sense, to collect the stray
lubricant before it hoses folks nearby and makes a mess.
Hadn't thought about it, but slide valves would take a lot
of oil.

Grandpa had a slide-valve Willys-Knight automobile, but all the
sliding and valving were internal - couldn't watch the fun. It
was a very quiet engine...
