I would not say they were easily retrofitted. Many of them (F&J, IHC and F-M
for example) are quite complicated and fussy devices and are frequently not
found on engines that are 'barn fresh' as they were frequently the first
thing that was chucked :)

it was then kept on further production models. Cheaper than a complete re
design job.
