That is the way to do it, but simpler if you cut a section out of the round 
piece you have turned, at the correct angle like you said.  Then, if the piece 
is steel, take it to a machine shop and have them put it on their magnetic 
surface grinder and grind each side to proper thickness you want.  Makes a 
perfect egg shape every time and with proper edge angles to lock up in the bore 
correctly.
