  Here in Northwest Iowa at my place we always call them chain hoists. 
  However, I have a friend that works for a power company and he has 
  always referred to them as chain falls.  His go through a gearbox.  Ours 
  are an endless chain set up like a block and tackle.  That might be the 
  difference or maybe there is no difference other than terminology.
