Hi Joe,
         Once the iron bar is removed it allows the smoke to escape. 

Hi Dave - 

DAMN !!! I knew there had to be a reason for that iron bar - I took it
out and it let all the smoke out.  It also got hot.  So I Ass Ume it
holds the heat in also.
